PETS Programme

The PETS Foundation, under the leadership of Dr. Michael Rice, has been in partnership with Net vir Pret since 2012. The Foundation has concentrated on developing programmes for in-service teacher training (INSET) and Continuous Professional Development, The first of these, developed with the help of local teachers and Net vir Pret staff, resulted in three on-line courses in both Afrikaans and English for the teaching of Fractions, Decimals and Percentages which were accredited for CPD points and available on http://trainingteachers.org.za

PETS has promoted early literacy development in multi-lingual settings with the support of Net vir Pret, and on numerous occasions has conducted writing skills workshops, and assisted with an oral history project recording local community stories, now lodged in the Barrydale Public Library.

PETS most recent contribution to teacher development is It Begins at Birth, a refresher and enrichment course available online in Afrikaans and English for practising teachers and Early Childhood Development practitioners which supports children’s early literacy learning in our multilingual country. The course material was researched and tested with Net vir Pret staff and teachers from several multi-grade classrooms at farm schools outside our village.
